Kayna · Saxony-Anhalt · Germany

A village that measures itself.

Small radio sensors in Kayna measure stream levels, water temperature at the open-air pool and heating energy in public buildings. Everything is open: build guides, code and data.

How it works

Every measurement follows four steps

  1. Measure

    A small battery-powered sensor, like a thermometer.

  2. Transmit

It sends a tiny radio message, like a text message that travels for kilometres.

  3. Receive

An antenna on a roof in the village listens to all sensors.

  4. Show

A server turns the number into a meaningful value on this website.

What Kayna-funkt does

Kayna-funkt is a volunteer citizens’ initiative in Kayna, part of the town of Zeitz in the Burgenlandkreis district. Since 2024 it runs its own free LoRaWAN network with self-hosted, open-source software (ChirpStack).

  • Water: stream level of the Große Schnauder, water temperature and level at the open-air pool.
  • Energy: radio-controlled radiator valves in the kindergarten, compared side by side.
  • Emergency communication: off-grid emergency points using Meshtastic, winner of the 2026 innovation contest of the state CIO of Saxony-Anhalt.
  • Lending: free gateways, field testers and sensors for municipalities, clubs and schools.

All build guides are published on OpenCode, the German public sector code platform. Data is licensed under DL-DE BY 2.0.

Most pages are in German for now. Translations of the core pages will follow.
