What are you doing?
Kayna-funkt is an outstanding volunteer-based citizens‘ initiative dedicated to the digitalization of the town of Kayna. Our goal is to make the town safer and more efficient by setting up and operating free LoRaWAN sensor networks. We offer solutions for flood warnings, drought prevention, vandalism prevention, and energy savings through smart heating management. Through workshops and training courses, we empower residents to use and operate the technology themselves.
We openly share our knowledge so that other communities can also benefit from our experience.

2024
Launch of the free LoRaWAN network in Kayna
In December 2024, the free sensor network went into operation. We quietly measured whether the entire town had reception and distributed flyers everywhere we successfully measured.
2025
Installation of “Schnauder” water level sensor in Kayna
Energy savings in daycare centers
Controlling the radiator valves ensures that the daycare center in Kayna does not consume unnecessary energy outside of its hours of operation.
In coordination with the municipal energy management department, a property analysis is also carried out and the consumption meter readings are transmitted daily.
Early detection of Cercospora
To detect this fungal disease in the field, we measure the temperature and relative humidity near the ground. We use this data to create a scoring system and issue an alert when a predetermined score is reached.
Vandalism prevention
Equipment is frequently damaged at various locations in the town. Smart early detection and citizen engagement are intended to prevent the financial consequences of this vandalism.
Pool water level at Waldbad
Our forest pool is fed by a spring. To ensure that no time is lost when filling the pool, we measure the pool level. This allows us to check it remotely or using a cell phone.
